 Accommodation in the city can become scarce in the summer, particularly during August, when the five-week Salzburg Festival is in full swing.
Hotels in Salzburg are at their most expensive at this time of the year, although lodging can still prove fairly pricey during the winter months, especially around Christmas time and New Year, when the city is always busy.
The Salzburg tourist office provides a useful hotel brochure, listing the main guesthouses (pensions), youth hostels, self-catering apartments and camping grounds, with a number of good budget lodging options for those trying to save the pennies.

Always popular is the extremely sociable Salzburg International Youth Hotel (YoHo) on the Paracelsusstrasse, which features ensuite dormitory accommodation, cheap meals and even seasonal skiing trips. The Sound of Music is very present at this hostel and you can even enjoy daily screenings of this iconic movie along with cheap Austrian beers.
Mid-range accommodation in Salzburg comes in the form of pensions and hotels, with some reliable choices located along roads such as the Auerspergstrasse, Getreidegasse and Kaigasse, and also the Rupertgasse, where a number of family run pensions are just a short stroll from the very heart of the Old Town.
 Also worth considering is the Best Western Hotel Stieglbrau on the Rainerstrasse, where spacious guest rooms are cheap, clean and close to the main railway station.
At the top end of the accommodation scale and near to the Best Western is the Crowne Plaza the Pitter, which is situated alongside the Salzburg Congress Hall.
Head a few minutes to the south-west and you will find the Salzburg Sheraton Hotel, where more than 150 rooms are spread over six floors.
