Tourists shopping in Salzburg will easily be able to find both souvenirs of their visit and gifts, with Mozart Chocolates (Mozartkugeln) being a firm favourite and available from a number of outlets, including the gift shop at the Mirabell Palace (Schloss Mirabell) and confectionary outlets on the Griesgasse.

Situated within the Old Town (Altstadt) and near to the main square, the Residenzplatz presents a number of good shopping opportunities in Salzburg, with local crafts shops selling beautiful embroidered linens and clothing. Austrian markets are worth experiencing and on the University Square, the Green Market is amongst the best and a great place to purchase local produce and handicrafts.

Where to Shop

Old Town Salzburg is where to head for the serious shopping and the characterful district contains in excess of 400 different retail outlets, meaning that you can easily spend a day or two strolling around the various stores and boutiques. Many of the shops are interspersed with cafes and similar eateries, so there is plenty of opportunity should you require some sustenance during your shopping trip.

The Getreidegasse is located within the Old Town area of Salzburg and this bustling stretch is the city's premier shopping street. Lined with some of Salzburg's finest historical buildings and brimming with atmosphere, the Getreidegasse can become quite crowded at times, so if you plan to sightsee whilst shopping, try to arrive early in the morning, so that you can fully appreciate the architecture and charming courtyards.

Image of the ResidenzplatzLocated on the right-hand side of Old Town Salzburg (Rechte Altstadt), the Linzergasse in another important shopping thoroughfare and runs alongside the banks of the Salzach River. The Linzergasse is often referred to as the sister to the Getreidegasse and contains everything from bakers and pharmacies, to jewellery and Austrian clock makers.

The biggest shopping mall in Salzburg is the Europark. Situated on the very outskirts of the city and on the Europastrasse, the Europark offers parking for over 4,000 cars and contains around 130 shops, including the anchor store of IKEA. The Europark also boasts a number of peaceful parks and landscaped recreational spaces.
