It will soon become apparent to visitors that one of the best ways to travel around central Salzburg is by foot, although public transport in the form of both buses and trolleybuses is also on hand if required. Also often referred to as the WA Mozart Airport, Salzburg Airport is a mere 5 km / 3 miles south-west of the city centre and easily reached by bus transport, trolleybus, shuttles and taxis. Each year, approximately two million travellers fly in and out of Salzburg Airport, with Ryanair being amongst the cheapest airlines. During the winter skiing season, the Amadeus Terminal (Terminal 2) sees the majority of the charter flights.

The majority of the Old Town district in Salzburg is pedestrianised and therefore completely traffic-free. The Altstadt Garage is amongst the closest car parks to this part of the city and located beneath the Mönchsberg. Alternatively, street parking is also available and tends to be considerably cheaper than attended car parks, with automatic ticket machines operating within the central 'blue zone' during shopping hours. Three prominent Autobahns (motorways) meet at Salzburg and form a loop around the city's environs - the A1 (east), the A8 / E52 (west) and the A10 / E55 (south).

A comprehensive network of bus transport operates within Salzburg, with a variety of different tickets available. City buses are run by StadtBus and single bus tickets can be purchased directly from the bus driver. However, all other bus tickets need to be purchased from one of the city's numerous ticket machines, which are to be found at all of the major shops. Alternatively, those wishing to travel around Salzburg by bus can purchase day tickets or even weekly bus passes, available from either the various tourist outlets or the Tabak shops.

The Hauptbahnhof is the train station and enjoys a particularly central situation. Speedy hourly Intercity trains depart from Salzburg and travel to Vienna, via Linz, with an expected journey time of just over three hours. Those wishing to travel to Innsbruck by train will find that the 'corridor train' through Germany offers the fastest route. Train transport also runs every hour to Munich, lasting just under two hours.
